On Monday, June 30th, we are planning a day-trip to the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza. These are the ruins that contain the famous El Castillo pyramid, ancient ball court and observatory. This archaeological site is only 15 minutes away from Yaxunah - the village where Nancy has done fieldwork - so we will stop there to take a relaxing dip in the cenote (beautiful fresh water source) and have an authentic lunch with the locals.

It will be a 2.5 hour drive from the resort so we will leave around 6:30am. We will plan to be back to the resort by early evening.

Please let us know if you would like to join us so we will have enough transportation.

Tips for Excursion

I would also suggest bringing a large water bottle for the day trip. The only cash you will need to bring for this day trip is some extra cash if you would like to buy any arts or crafts from the locals in Yaxunah. The women make beautifully hand embroidered textiles and some of the men make elaborate wooden carvings.

Wear comfortable shoes and wear your bathing suit under your clothing. Bring undergarments for the trip home.

In preparation for the climate and out of respect for the locals, please dress in comfortable but modest clothing (e.g. women should wear long shorts or linen pants and a cotton t-shirt). Not only will this provide extra sun cover but the locals are not used to seeing women in short shorts and tank tops. Also, a one piece bathing suit or tankini would be the preferred swimming attire.
